Abstract
Exercise testing is routinely performed to assess functional capacity, identify changes in cardiopulmonary physiology, evaluate symptoms and signs induced by exercise, and to determine the appropriateness of physical activity in children (and adults) with acquired and congenital heart disease. In general, exercise is beneficial for anyone with elevated blood pressure to prevent future cardiovascular complications, but some precaution may be acknowledged. In this chapter, we summarize the basics of exercise testing, discuss what is known regarding the utility of exercise testing in the evaluation of the hypertensive child, and review existing recommendations regarding exercise testing and competitive sports participation in the hypertensive athlete.
