Gastrostomy and Jejunostomy Feedings in Children with Cerebral Palsy

Feeding problems are common in children with cerebral palsy. The causes vary and include poor oral motor function, poor generalized tone and motor function, and cognitive impairment. These in turn can result in poor airway protection and severe gastroesophageal reflux, which may put children with severe cerebral palsy at risk for aspiration and chronic respiratory disease. Persistent uncorrected feeding problems will lead to severe malnutrition. It is important to evaluate these children for causes of feeding problems so that appropriate intervention, including tube feedings, may be initiated in a timely manner.
