Abstract
It is critical to understand the basic tenets of neonatal cardiovascular physiology to care for patients in the neonatal period. This chapter reviews the basics of fetal circulation, including parallel circulations, mixing and preferential blood flow through the ductus venosus, the foramen ovale, and the ductus arteriosus. Transition from fetal to neonatal circulation is also discussed, including changes in pulmonary and systemic vascular resistances. Neonatal cardiovascular physiology is also explored, including differences in fetal, pediatric, and adult myocytes, diastolic cardiac function and ventricular compliance, and neonatal pressures.
