Abstract
The cartilaginous and ligamentous properties of the pediatric spine result in unique patterns of injury following direct and indirect trauma. Children are more likely to have ligamentous injury and spinal cord injuries without associated fractures. Recognizing these patterns of injury is critical for proper diagnosis and treatment. Spine clearance in the setting of trauma depends on the mechanism of injury, clinical presentation, and presence of distracting injuries. Various imaging modalities may be utilized including plain radiographs, CT, and MRI.
