Abstract
Quality health care is lacking in low-middle income countries (LMICs), which results in significant mortality and economic loss. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a resource-intensive disease, and lack of resources in LMICs makes it challenging for health care providers to deliver quality care to these patients. A value-based health care (VBHC) approach can be useful in addressing these challenges and can help address patients' needs by adopting innovative resource utilization. In this article, the authors aim to address the feasibility of implementing a VBHC model for patients with CHD in Pakistan through multiple initiatives taken over time at a single tertiary care center. They assess the six components of VBHC proposed by Porter and Lee in their strategic value agenda for each of the initiatives, highlight the challenges and successes of their efforts to implement VBHC at their center, and determine its relevance and sustainability in an LMIC.
