Adaptive control of induced hypotension with optimum drug infusion

Resumen

The authors describe an adaptive control strategy that is suited for automatic control of mean arterial blood pressure (MABP). The performance of the control was evaluated for application of sodium nitroprusside, a vasodilator drug, using a computer simulation with a model of the patient response derived from actual patient data. One feature of the controller is its ability to optimize the quantity of infused drug without generating an offset in the controlled pressure. A comparison with another control strategy which has been used in the clinics is presented. The proposed controller appears to be excellent in regulating MABP.
